A violent robbery occurred in the port of San Antonio, Chile, where thieves stole several containers, including copper belonging to state-owned Codelco, according to a Reuters report.

Police sources report that the total worth of the stolen cargo is approximately US4.4 million.

A statement by Juan Carlos Catalan, the local prosecutor, said ten armed men entered the San Antonio port early in the morning of 11 January, attacked workers, and stole 13 boxes, 12 of which included copper.

Catalan added that Chilean authorities are working on the investigation and reviewing security footage but have not detained any suspects.

Last October the government decided to tighten security on trains because a spate of gangster heists took place in northern Chile. Since then, the latest heist is reported as the largest copper theft.
