    Polar成立于1993年，是美国南方航空运输公司和通用资本航空服务公司（GE Capital Aviation Services，简称GECAS）的合资企业。它于1993年6月开始运营，开始包机，后来增加了定期服务。1994年期间，极地航空货运被美国联邦航空管理局认定为受补充的航空承运人，1994年7月4日由美国运输部认证为美国全货运航空公司。经过几年的持续增长，公司的其余部分被GECAS收购。 2001年11月，Polar被阿特拉斯航空全球控股（Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings，AAWW）收购，其Atlas Air子公司是ACMI（飞机，船员，维修和保险）货物租赁的提供商。Polar成为AAWW的定期服务提供商，而Atlas继续以湿租赁方式向主要航空公司供应波音747货机。2006年10月，宣布DHL Express将收购Polar的49％股权。Polar仍然是阿特拉斯航空集团控股（51％）的多数股权，拥有736名员工（截至2007年3月）。
